Subspecies in India

Phayre's leaf monkey is also known as Phayre's Langur. There are three subspecies recognized viz. T. p. phayrei (occurs in India), T. p. crepuscula, and T. p. shanicus

This species is listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).

It has wide distribution in NE India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thiland, Laos, Vietnam. In India, it is distributed in Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Manipur. It is largely arboreal and feeds on leaves, flowers and fruits.

Conservation Status:

This species is listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).


According to IUCN Red List assessment, population of this species is decreasing. There are no estimates of its population. Main threat to its existence come from habitat loss and fragmentation owing to human activities such as logging, mining, agriculture and plantation, residential and commercial development. It is also hunted in some areas for food.
