Kashmir Grey Langur or Chamba Langur was once considered as a subspecies of Northern Grey Langur Semnopithecus entellus, now treated as a separate species.

Semnopithecus ajax - Kashmir Grey Langur



Kashmir Grey Langur has a very restricted distribution especially at higher elevations i.e. between 2200 m to 4000 m. Its range include Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. It is mainly reported from Chamba valley in Himachal Pradesh. This species is largely arboreal but can be found sometimes on ground. It is largely a leaf-eating species that may sometimes take to ripe and unripe fruits.

According to IUCN Red List assessment population of this species is declining at an alarming rate. There is no estimate of its population. Due to it extremely restricted distribution, it is more vulnerable to habitat fragmentation which causes a major threat to it. Anthropogenic activities such as logging, residential and commercial development.
