This species is native to Himalayan foothills. It was once widespread throughout the tall alluvial grasslands (at Himalayan foothills) from Uttar Pradesh to Bengal. Now the species is restricted to only southern Bhutan and Assam. There is only one viable population exists in Manas National Park. There is not much known about its ecology.

This species is listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).


According to IUCN Red List assessment, population of this species is decreasing and currently restricted to a small geeographical area. Current estimate of its population is 100-250 mature individuals. The population is vulnerable to many natural and anthropogenic disturbances. This species faces competition with wild pig which has outnumbered Pygmy Hog all over its present and historic range. As the population is tiny and has very restricted distribution, it faces threat from wildlife diseases, haitat loss, hunting and logging, expansion of agriculture, overgrazing, fire etc.
