This species is distributed in the highlands of Nepal, Bhutan, India, China and Myanmar. It is a solitary and nocturnal species that inhabits rocky areas, forests as well as shrublands present in its distribution range. It forages on grass, forbs, moss, lichen, and other plant material of trees and shrubs.

This species is listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).


According to IUCN Red List assessment, population of this species is decreasing all over its range. There are no quantitative estimates of its population except it being 'rare' all over its range. Major and direct threat to its survival in wild come from hunting and trapping for musk gland and fur. Other than that, habitat loss and fragmentation due to various anthropogenic activities causes a serious threat to its population.
