Moschus cupreus Grubb, 1982 - Kashmir Musk Deer

Subspecies in India

This species was once considered as subspecies of Alpine Musk Deer (M. chrysogaster), but now treated as separate species.

This species is listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).

This species is native to highlands of Kashmir and adjoining region of Pakistan and Afghanistan. It is a ruminant herbivore that mainly feeds on forbs, shrubs, grasses, moss, lichen etc. It is solitary species and can be active in daytime as well as in night.

This species is listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).


According to IUCN Red List assessment, population its speies is decreasing all over its range. There are no estimatesof its population available. Threat to its mainly come from hunting and trapping. It otherwise faces threats from habitat destruction owing different anthropogenic activities.
