Macaca fascicularis Raffles, 1821 - Long-tailed Macaque

Subspecies in India

It is also known as Crab-eating Macaque. There are 10 subspecies so far recognized under M. fascicularis out of which M. f. umbrosus is distributed on Nicobar islands whereas rest all are extralimital. M. f. umbrosus is known as Nicobar Long-tailed/Nicobar Crab-eating Macaque or Nicobar Monkey. 

Nicobar long-tailed Macaque is listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).

Nicobar long-tailed/Crab-eating Macaque is endemic to Nicobar islands. Major populations are known from Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve, Campbell Bay NP, and Galathea NP. This species prefers coastal forests including mangroves where it forages on fruits as well as crabs (the reason for its altrnative common name).

Conservation Status:

Nicobar long-tailed Macaque is listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).


According to IUCN Red List assessment population of this subspecies is decreasing. There are no studies that provide any estimates of its population. It is believed to be locally common and can be frequently seen its habitat. There are also no studies describing any major threats to its existence and survival in wild. However, it is believed that habitat fragmentation and encroachment could cause decline in its population.
