Trachypithecus geei Khajuria, 1956 - Golden Langur

Subspecies in India

Gee's Golden Langur or Golden Langur has two recognized subspcies viz. T. g. geei and T. g. bhutanensis. It is believed to hybridize with Capped Langur T. pileatus where range of both these species overlap.

This species is listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).

Trachypithecus geei - Golden Langur



Golden Langur is distributed in a very small region in western Assam and Bhutan. It is mainly arboreal and seldome comes to ground. It mainly feeds on leaves, ripe/unripe fruits, flowers, buds etc.

Conservation Status:

This species is listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).


According to IUCN Red List assessment, population of this species is decreasing at an alarming rate. There are around 6500 mature individuals as per an estimate of its population. Main threat to its survival comes from habitat loss and fragmentation due to human activities such as logging, agriculture and plantation, residential and commercial development, and mining. In some parts of its range, it is hunted for food.
