Platacanthomys lasiurus - Malabar Spiny Dormouse



This is an endemic species restricted to western ghats of southern India (south Karnataka and Kerala). Very little is known about this species. It is arboreal. nocturnal, solitary, and frugivorous species. 

Conservation Status:

This species is listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).


According to IUCN Red List assessment, population of this species is decreasing. There are no estimates of its population available except some anecdotal reports of presence/absence. Threats to its survival in wild come from habitat loss and fragmentation, agriculture, logging, trapping and hunting.
