This species is listed as Near Threatened in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).According to IUCN Red List assessment, population fo this species is decreasing. There are no estimates of its total global population available. However, it is believed to be patchily distributed and a total number may not exceed 10,000 mature individuals. Threats to its survival mainly come from haibtat loss and fragmentation by various human activities such as agricultural expansion, logging, residential and commercial development. Some anecdotes report this species being hunted for fur, bones claws and teeth to be used for ornamental purpose and in medicine.
