Neophocaena phocaenoides G. Cuvier, 1829 - Finless Porpoise

Subspecies in India

It is more precisely known as Indo-Pacific Finless Porpoise, after separating N. asiaeorientalis (Narrow-ridged Finless Porpoise) from this species.

According to IUCN Red List assessment, population of this species is decreasing all over its range. Current population estimates are between 1000 and 1500 mature individuals. Threats to its survival come from habitat loss due to human intereference like marine water pollution, marine resource harvest, overfishing, and occasional entanglement in fishing nets.
