Mustela altaica - Mountain Weasel



This species is distributed in the high lands of central Asia. It is well adapted to cold climate and high elevation. They are mostly solitary, active during day as well as night, They are carnivorous mostly hunt Voles and Pikas.

This species is listed as Near Threatened in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).


According to IUCN Red List assessment, population of this species is decreasing all over its range. There are no estimates of its population. Major threats to its survival come from habitat loss and fagmentation. There are reports of occasional trapping and poaching too.
