Manis pentadactyla - Chinese Pangolin


This species is present in Nepal, NE india (regions adjoining China), China, Malay Peninsula. It inhabits variety of habitats including braodleaf forest, primary and secondary forests, bamboo thickets, grasslands, and sometimes agricultural fields. It is solitary and an insectivorous species that mainly feed on ants. It is very secretive species and strictly nocturnal, which makes its difficult to study. 
 
Conservation Status:

This species is listed as Critically Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).

According to IUCN Red List assessment, population is decreasing all over its range. Its global population is estimated between 50,000 and 1, 00,000 mature individuals. It is also estimated that population has decreased up to 90% in last 50 years. Majority of threat to its survival mainly come from poaching and trapping. It is one of the most trafficked species in the world. Habitat fragmentation and loss due to agriculture, pesticide use, logging, commercial and residential development are other reasons for population decline.
