Subspecies in India

Northern Pig-tailed Macaque was once considered as a subspecies of Macaca nemestrina (now known as Southern Pig-tailed Macaque), which is now a separate species. 


 Northern Pig-tailed Macaque is listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).

It is an uncommon and non-endemic species distributed in NE India, Bangladesh, China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thiland, and Vietnam. In India, it is found south to Brahmaputra river. Its range extends eastwards from Assam and Meghalaya to Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram. 


Conservation Status:

 
This species is listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).


According to IUCN Red List assessment population of this species is declining. There is no conclusive estimate of its global population that exists. In Namdapha National Park its population was estimated to be 0.07 individuals per sq km (Chetry et al. 2003). Other than this, there is no other effort that shows any recent population trends. Threat to its existence come mainly from extensive agriculture, mining, urbanization in its native range that causes habitat fragmentation. This species is hunted for food and medicine in some parts which causes a direct decline threat.
