Hoolock leuconedys - Eastern Hoolock Gibbon



Eastern Hoolock Gibbon is rare in India. It is distributed in extreme east of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. It can also be found in west Myanmar. It is a canopy dwelling speciesthat prefers evergreen or deciduous forests.

Conservation Status:

 This species is listed as Vulnerable in IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).


According to IUCN Red List assessment, population of this species is declining. Its global population is estimated to be between 10,000 and 50,000 individuals. about 170 individuals were found in east Arunachal Pradesh (Das et al., 2006). Threat its occurrence mainly comes from habitat loss and fragmentation owing to heavy logging, agriculture, mining and residential development. Gibbons are hunted for food as well as medicine which causes a direct threat to it existence.
