Hoolock hoolock - Western Hoolock Gibbon



Western Hoolock Gibbon is an uncommon and non-endemic species. It is distributed in NE India (in Assam and Mizoram), Bangladesh, and west to Chindwin river in Myanmar.


Conservation Status:

This species is listed as Endangered in the IUCN RedList of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).


According to IUCN Red List assessment, its population is declining all over its range. Its population is estimated approximately to 12,000 individuals across its range. Habitat fragmentation by anthropogenic activities such as agriculture, mining and urbanization is the main cause of its population decline apart from hunting for food and medicine.
