There are two subspecies listed for this species viz. C. t. temminckii and C. t. moormensis.

This species has wide distribution in Sotheast Asia. C. t. temminckii is distributed in Malay Peninsula and Sumatra; whereas C. t. moormensis is distributed in eastward of Nepal, NE India, and rest other area in SE Asia. apart from being crepescular, it is equally active in day and night for foraging. They are solitary and feed on rodents and small ungulates.

This species is listed as Near Threatened in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).


According to IUCN Red List assessment population of this species is decreasing all over its range. there are no recent estimates of its population globally, but it is believed to be heavily fragmented. Habitat loss and fragmentation along with occasional trapping and hunting are the major threats to its survival in wild.
