Asian Wild Buffalo was once known from much of southeast Asia, but has a very patchy distribution overall. Its distribution range now include, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand and Cambodia. It is extinct from Myanmar Bangladesh, Laos, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam. In India, there two main populations of this species viz. in NE India especially in Assam and other in Chhatisgarh. It is otherwise has scattered distribution in Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Odhisha. 
It is a diurnal as well as nocturnal species that mainly feed on grasses and aquatic plants. Asian wild buffalo is knonw to have longest hornspan.

Conservation Status:

This species is listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).


Accrding to IUCN Red List assessment, this species is Endangered. Most of its population has gone extinct with a current estimate of 2500 mature individuals globally. Threat to its survival mainly come from habitat fragmentation due to human activities such as agriculture, residential and commercial development. Another major threat to its survival come from interbreeding and hybridization with domestic buffalo especially at the periphery of many pritected areas.
