Very little is known about this species. It is native to high altitudes (2300 to 4300m msl) in northern India. It is distributed in the states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. It is a diurnal species that lives in small colonies. It inhabits alpine and rocky montane areas. It is a herbivore mainly feed on grasses, forbes, roots, leaves of the plant species present in the surrounding areas.

According to IUCN Red List assessment, population of this species is declining. The main threats this species faces are anthropogenic i.e. urbanization, expansion of agriculture, livestock farming and ranching.
